Prevention is always better than a cure. But often times, a lot of us are so drawn to our careers that we tend to ignore the changes in our bodies. Little do we know that those tiny discomforts could be signs of imminent danger. It could be a serious illness or worse, life-threatening cancer!
Ovarian cancer is the most common type of cancer that attacks women. The symptoms are usually silent but if you pay close attention to your health, you’ll have a better chances of detecting the illness at its early stage.
So what are the symptoms that signal ovarian cancer?
- You feel bloated.
- Your abdomen is swollen.
- There’s pain or dragging sensation and pressure in your lower abdomen.
- You experience vague indigestion or nausea.
- You have a poor appetite.
- You easily feel full after eating.
- You notice changes in your bowel and bladder movement (constipation and the urge to urinate frequently).
- You see abnormal vaginal discharge or bleeding though the latter is rare.
The abovementioned symptoms appear to be vague as women commonly experience them from time to time. Also, they may indicate non-cancerous medical conditions other than ovarian cancer. It could be a gastrointestinal issue, a kidney problem or even pregnancy.
Additionally, it is important to note that ovarian cancer symptoms are seldom apparent in the early stages. If you noticed, the symptoms are linked to gastrointestinal issues. This is because the ovaries are located near the bladder and intestines. Hence, you may misinterpret early signs as regular tummy discomforts.
There are also no routine screening tests done to detect ovarian cancer. Therefore, the signs given above should never be ignored. Whether they indicate ovarian cancer or not, the best thing to do is consult your doctor if you experience any unusual changes in your body.
