Mary Kay Letourneau made the headlines in 1997 after allegedly raping a sixth-grade student, Vili Fualaau. She was then jailed for her actions for more than seven years. However, the two found a way back to each other after Letourneau served her sentence. The couple got married and now have two daughters.
But earlier this week, reports said that the 10-year marriage between the former sixth-grade student and teacher turned wife is coming to an end. Did Fualaau finally come to his senses?
Before all this happened, Letourneau and Fualaau’s relationship has met criticisms from the media 20 years ago. The woman was 34 when she began a sexual relationship with her student who was only 12 that time. She was brought to the court and was restricted to see the boy.
However, after being arrested for what she did, Letourneau still continued seeing her former sixth-grade student, which resulted in the court dropping a full 7-year jail sentence for her. Yet, this only stopped the teacher-student affair for a little while. Quickly after being released from jail, Letourneau filed a petition to lift the order that was restricting her and Fualaau to see each other.
The request was granted. And so, the two got married in 2005. It appears they were able to sort things out given that their marriage lasted for 10 years. Letourneau even claimed they love each other.
Meanwhile, people have shared their thoughts about this controversial relationship. A lot of commenters said that the woman is abusive and she robbed the boy of his childhood. But it seems all the comments didn’t matter to the two back when they were “in love.”
