Many cat photos all over the internet can cheer you up even in the worse days. But among the many feline cutie pies that have been photographed, one kitty seems to dominate them all. Read on to find out why this cat’s unique beauty is taking the internet by storm.
I am no photographer but if I were one, I would love this cat to be my muse. I am talking about Quimera, a feline that’s believed to be born with genetic chimerism. Her face, split in two shades, is so beautifully unique.
What is Genetic Chimerism?
Genetic chimerism is the condition in which two or more zygotes are fused in a single organism. A zygote contains a combination of DNA. When many of them form a fusion, several differing DNA characteristics may be passed onto the offspring.
In layman’s terms, we can define genetic chimerism or chimera as the formation of an organism from two or more different eggs. These eggs carry the DNA from two different creatures or individuals, which will be inherited by the baby.
Meaning, a genetic chimera possesses distinct characteristics from its parent DNA. Which is why a chimera commonly presents rare features.
In animals, however, genetic chimerism doesn’t just occur naturally. Though some chimeras inherit the attributes from their parents, there are others that are created in laboratories. For some reasons that only the field of science can explain, some chimeras are born through in vitro fertilization wherein laboratory doctors infuse the additional cells during transplantation.
Chimera in Greek mythology, on the other hand, refers to a hybrid monster that breathes fire. It has the head of a lion and a goat while its body is a combination of both the animals’ physique. Ironically, its tail ends not with some ball of hair but with a snake’s head. Because of the mythological monster, animals that are divergent and possess disparate body parts are referred to as chimera.
